• First of all, welcome to Zura! You don’t need to know anything. No worries, just come. Every class is beginner-friendly. You take it step by step at your own pace. Start where you are, do what you can. All classes at Zura are judgment-free. It’s one of the things that makes Zura, Zura. Yoga is a personal journey, not a competition.

  • You need a yoga mat, large towel to place on your mat and water bottle. If you don’t bring your own you can rent a mat and towel. Some people like to have a second, smaller towel for personal use.

  • Definitely. Arrive well-hydrated. It is best to drink plenty of water prior to coming to class. We recommend drinking an additional liter of water (approximately four 8 oz glasses) in addition to your daily requirement. If you are taking an early morning class, you may want to start hydrating the night before. A hydrated body will dispel heat more efficiently and you will feel more comfortable in the hot room. However, don’t overindulge as many postures massage and compress your organs and a full bladder might not feel too good. You also don’t want to have to leave the room during class.

  • Avoid eating at least two hours before class. Eat light, healthy foods throughout the day leading up to class. You will regret a full belly when you are twisting and compressing your abdominal wall and muscles.

  • Clothing designed specifically for yoga practice is preferred. Breathable, stretchy, quick-drying/sweat-wicking or cotton fabrics are recommended.

Undergarments, string bikinis, skimpy speedos, loose-fitting shorts, and tops are strongly discouraged. Be aware that some fabrics can become transparent when they get sweaty and wet. Avoid wearing long, thick pants or tops as they will get heavy and uncomfortable.

    Perfume and cologne not allowed!

  • “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga” is one of the most common misconceptions that prevent people from taking a yoga class. However, yoga is not about how flexible you are. Physically t’s about stretching and strengthening your body and spine in all directions. All that matters is that you try your best and go to your personal edge, wherever that may be, and you will get 100% of the benefit. If you can move you can do yoga.

If you think you are not “flexible enough”, you definitely should start practicing yoga as soon as you can. Hot yoga especially warms and softens your muscles and connective tissue so you can move more easily right from your first class. Doing yoga will increase your flexibility over time.

When your flexibility improves you are less prone to soft tissue injuries. Just do what you can do without regard to what others are doing and after a few classes, you will soon notice an improvement in ease of movement and flexibility.

  • In Studio A most classes will heat to 105-106 degrees with 40%-50% humidity. Definitely hot and juicy. There is plenty of clean air circulation given our brand new state-of-the-art heating system so it does not feel stuffy or closed in. Vinyasa and Fusion classes will be at 101 degrees and 40-50% humidity,

  • The heat gently increases your flexibility by relaxing the moving components of the body, from the joints to the tendons and muscles allowing them to give way to a deeper stretch. The heat will gently loosen the fascia, a saran wrap-like tissue that encases your muscles, helping you achieve a deeper stretch safely. As the sweat leaves your pores, with it goes some of the tightness in your body,

The heat will make you sweat – a lot. That sweat pulls the toxins out of your pores leaving your skin looking and feeling refreshed. Hot yoga is an all-natural way to cleanse and detoxify your skin from head to toe long after you step off the mat.

Your heart rate becomes elevated which improves your circulatory system (heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries). Fat will distribute to the bloodstream, which we then use as energy. Capillaries respond to heat by dilating. This allows oxygen to muscles, tissues, glands and organs helping in the removal of waste products.

As metabolic rate increases, you burn more calories which can contribute to weight loss if you are burning more calories than you take in through your diet.

And it feels really good to let the sweat pour out of you!.

  • More intense exercise burns more calories. How long you practice, your current weight, your fitness level, and your gender also contribute to how many calories are burned.

According to a 2014 study performed at Colorado State University, a hot 26 class (90 minutes) found that on average women burned 330 calories and men burned 460 calories.

With a well-balanced diet, taking in fewer calories than you put out, devoting yourself to regular practice can help with weight loss. Taking 3 or more classes a week is recommended.

  • Yes, It can take a few classes to get used to the heat. Most likely this is caused by not drinking enough water for daily living let alone exercising in a heated room. There are many different opinions about how much water we need to drink each day. Commonly health experts recommend eight 8-ounce glasses of water, which equals about 2 liters or half a gallon a day. As with many things, how much water you need depends on the individual. Many factors, both external and internal affect how much water you need.

To practice in the heated room for 90 minutes, we estimate needing an additional four 8-ounce classes (1 liter) sometime during the day. Once you are drinking enough water your body will tolerate the heat better and you will feel better.

If you simply don’t like the heat, you might find that your body learns to like it after a few classes. Be open to the experience and see what happens. You may be surprised!

  • If you have never practiced hot yoga before you should not start while pregnant. However, if you have been an avid practitioner, you should check in with your doctor to see what is best for your body. Some pregnancies are at higher risk for a variety of reasons. While there is no official rule against practicing hot yoga while expecting, be safe before putting yourself or your baby at risk.

  • Please consult with your doctor/healthcare provider about any fitness activity you wish to undertake if you have a medical condition or undergoing treatment for a medical condition. If comfortable, please let your teacher know before class.

  • At Zura, our goal is to create a safe and healthy environment for all who choose to walk through our doors. We will be closely monitoring and following CDC and NJ state guidelines with respect to Covid-19. To that end, in addition to thoroughly cleaning our space regularly and installing a UV light air purification system, we strongly suggest that all students and staff wear masks in our common areas to avoid the spread of Covid-19. We will be running classes at reduced capacity to allow plenty of space between mats. While in-studio, those who are vaccinated have the option to remove their masks while practicing. We trust that our members will be honest about their vaccination status and mindful of the health and safety of our community. For further details, please refer to our Terms and Conditions on our website.

  • Zura has installed a brand new state of the art heating/humidification/air purification system. Hot humidified air is continuously pumped in, circulated and purified throughout the day.
